[oh. he hadn't meant for it to come off like -- like anything but a dumb joke, but he realises the tone didn't come across right (or maybe she'd been too perceptive, in a way he usually doesn't have to deal with). he keeps the text open, repeatedly typing things like i didn't mean it that way and sorry nico but he did mean to shut it down and he did mean to be flippant and move swiftly past her offer to help, because he can't accept it. he didn't mean to throw her kindness back in her face, but he wasn't -- really -- going to be able to pick it up at all]

[so ultimately he just... doesn't, respond, heaving a sigh and dropping his phone to the table. that was an excellent series of Unfortunate Events, for sure]
