[luckily, annabeth, she's used to magical thinking, even if she's not used to it working in tangible ways before she got the staff. nico nods along as annabeth explains, like all that tracks.]

Right, makes sense. Channeling intent and energy. So, let's put this through its paces... [glancing to annabeth.]

[ is it a relief that nico seems to get it, even if annabeth herself isn't exactly sold on how well she explained? yes. very much so. which is why annabeth nods, glancing over the page again before looking across the yard.

about twenty feet away there could be a fair sized branch in the middle of the grass, right? sure. she motions towards it with her head. ]

Can you make that into a traffic light?

[nico looks at it for a long moment, before she nods, holding the staff out in front of her with both hands, closing her eyes. the gold light in its ring crackles to life, and she focuses on what she wants to happen. she's figured out that commanding the staff along with her desire seems to be more reliable than just willing it.

her eyes snap open, and when she speaks, there's a certain weight to it.]

Limb to light!

[gold, glowing mist surges forward from the staff, enveloping the tree branch. in a flash, there's a decent facsimile of a los angeles traffic pole standing in the yard. perhaps not quite to scale, or matching in the details, but close enough. complete with a blue sign attached saying la brea blvd.

nico's eyebrows raise, and she laughs. she hadn't tried transmutation that complex before.]

Holy shit, that's new.

[ annabeth watches nico, the book still in hand and curious about the process she goes through for this to even work. that need to pick it apart step by step just so she can understand. but then nico's eyes open, and then she speaks, and annabeth can feel a different spark to the air around them.

the gold, glowing mist is new - and annabeth keeps an eye to it. to that, to the branch, and then eventually to the traffic pole now standing right in the middle of nico's back yard. annabeth - excited about this new development - quickly looks back over the book before shutting it with a definitive thud. ]
