NICO MINORU

Nico was born around 2000 to the wealthy Minoru family, a Los Angeles-based couple running the wildly successful tech company Wizard Computers. Her mother, Tina Minoru, was Wizard's CEO and (probably) a Master of the Mystic Arts on the side. You know, standard moonlighting. Just like how the charity organization the Minorus were a part of, PRIDE (Promoting Resilience, Independence, Dedication & Excellence) (because everything needs a super cool acronym) was a front for a criminal murder cult that wielded vast influence in LA behind the scenes. Nico and her older sister Amy were brought up unaware of what PRIDE was actually doing--yearly human sacrifices to a mysterious probably-alien figure called Jonah while seeking something buried deep beneath the city.
Through their families' involvement with PRIDE, while their parents were in meetings, Nico and Amy befriended Alex Wilder, Karolina Dean, Chase Stein, Molly Hernandez and Gert Yorkes. She grew particularly close to Alex and Karolina. When Nico was 14, Amy hacked Wizard's servers looking for information on her parents' company. Unknown to Amy, even after gaining access, videos that Tina held of the sacrifices to keep the other members of PRIDE in line were stored on the server. Jonah, seeing a potential threat, killed Amy and arranged it to look like a suicide by overdose. After Amy's death, Nico withdrew into herself, and she and her friends stopped talking to each other. She turned to Wicca and went full-tilt goth, hoping to keep other people at bay--but also she's genuinely super into it.
After about two years of this, Alex reached out to the others to try to hang out like they used to. Though all of them initially said no, circumstances brought them to the Wilder mansion, where they accidentally witnessed PRIDE's latest sacrifice. A lot of interpersonal drama later, they've all grown closer again, have learned the truth about what PRIDE is after, Karolina's turned out to be half-alien or something, Gert has a dinosaur, and they're on the run after being framed by Jonah and/or PRIDE for one of their ritual murders. At least Nico and Karolina became a thing.
Negative trait: anger
Nico initially seems to be surly and flippant, an inwardly-focused and brooding girl who drowns out the world with her headphones. And... well, yeah, that's pretty much accurate. But people contain multitudes! While Nico tends to speak brutally, she cares deeply about those close to her, though she doesn't trust easily. If that trust is betrayed once given, she'll be very slow to forgive, if she does at all. Nico doesn't enjoy her self-imposed isolation before the start of the series, but fears letting others close. While she opens back up to the other Runaways, and briefly reconnects with her parents before things take a turn for the worse, her old social habits die hard. (That's probably, y'know, the depression and survivor's guilt that followed Amy's death.) At her canon point she's more likely to socialize and form connections independently of her canon circle of friends, at least. Once she lets others in and forms close attachments, she is extremely devoted, not wanting to risk anything happening to those she's close to. When Karolina stays behind to hold off Jonah at the start of the first season finale, Nico pleads with her not to do it, leaving only reluctantly and in tears. She remains frantic and troubled until the group manages to rescue Karolina, shutting down suggestions by the others that they leave without her. That flippancy comes back into play here as well, with Nico (falsely, probably) asserting that "if it was [Chase], we would [leave without him]. But it's not." in response to Chase trying to suggest leaving her. BUT OH YES the survivor's guilt. That's a major thing with Nico. She spent two years thinking Amy had committed suicide, wondering if there was something she could have done, barely able to stand being alive with that uncertainty. Though she's learned what actually happened, the effect on her mental health and behavior has lingered. She still lost her sister, after all. Nico is generally very insecure with other people and quick to anger, aiming to protect herself by keeping most people at arm's length. All of that said, Nico is highly expressive and creative, acting playfully with friends and family when in the right mood, and pouring significant energy into decorating her room and grimoire, along with the effort she places into her style. She still needles the people she's close to, but the barbs are less cutting. Nico's just kind of caustic that way! But regardless, she's well-intentioned when she cares to be, and a highly loyal person overall.
